.: sunday drive - bat-signal and twin peaks :.

Inspired by an evening with soulful live Irish music, we took Lady out for a Sunday drive through the Rhön mountains and explored a huge archeological excavation of an ancient Celtic settlement on the slope and summit of the Lesser Gleichberg.

No one had ever heard of such a site right around the corner in Thüringen, even if they already knew about the twin mountains. We found it with the help of a travel website by the unfortunate name of Quermania (all Across -mania) that features all sorts of interesting destinations in all regions. It was an enjoyable hike, though we were not quite as foolhardy, as when we explored the Celtic Ring in Otzenhausen buried in snow and weren't sure of our footing at all.

The walls and foundations were impressive, as was the scale and scope of the community, with advanced defenses, roadways and plumbing. Though rain was threatening, especially from the grand view at the top of mountain, we had a nice descent back through the forest and on to our next goal: the imposing medieval Fortress Heldburg in Bad Colberg with its watch tower, the "Fränkische Leuchte." From the observation deck, one could see the far outpost, also with Bat-Signal, of the Fortress of Coburg. This was among the stranger castles we’ve visited since, despite a lot of renovation work, one could see a good portion of the rooms, including this beautiful fresco in the chapel.

Begeistert vor dem Abend der irischen Unterhaltung, erforschten wir eine keltische Ansiedlung in den Rhön auf dem Kleiner Gleichberg mit Lady. Keiner wusste von der archäologischen Seite in der Nähe Thüringen, trotz des Kenntnisse der Zwilling-Berge. Wir fanden es mit der Hilfe einer Reisewebsite durch den unglücklichen Namen von Quermania (querdurch Deutschland), welcher alle Sorten von interessanten Ausflugszielen zeigt.

Es war eine angenehme Wanderung, obwohl wir nicht ganz ebenso tollkühn waren wie, als wir den keltischen Ring in Otzenhausen erforschten: als es im Schnee begraben wurde, und gab es keinen Pfad zu folgen.

Die Wände und Fundamente waren eindrucksvoll, auch war die Skala der Gemeinschaft, mit der fortgeschrittenen Verteidigung, Straßen und Wasserwerke.

Obwohl Regen von der großartigen Ansicht an der Gipfel drohte, hatten wir Glück für unseren Abstieg und für unseren folgenden Zielsort: die eindrucksvolle mittelalterliche Festung Heldburg mit seinem Bewachungsturm, "Fränkische Leuchte" in Bad Colberg. Vom Aussichtsplattform konnte man den weiten Vorposten (auch mit dem “Bat-Signal”) der Festung Coburg sehen.

Trotz viel Renovierungsarbeit konnte man die meisten Zimmer, einschließlich dieser schönen Freske in der Kapelle, sehen.
